Pigment Variations
What's in a name?
Pigment Variations is heavily reliant Arturia's Pigment's synth engine ran through some outboard FX (Onward, Lost and Found, Mood MKII, X, LVX) to create different atmospheres over its ten plus minute span. It also includes some limited word salad and a small bit of Tonverk drum samples pops up here and there.
I could have named it "Christmas Variations" given the word salad leans towards Christmassy words.
The name also reminds me of an old compilation cassette I had from the Enigma label back in the day. That cassette was labeled "Enigma Variations".The cassette included songs from bands such as Redd Kross, TSOL, The Untouchables, etc. Infamous bands such as the Smithereens and Stryper came through that label or its Restless subsidiary label at one point or another . Personal favorites like the Dead Milkmen, Pere Ubu, Mojo Nixon, Sonic Youth had stints on the label as well.
Like many other labels from those days, it no longer exists.
That Enigma Variations is not to be confused with Elgar Elgar's "Variations on an original theme Op. 36" which is often referred to as the "Enigma Variations"; whereby the composer created variations of a central theme by sketched out a musical idea associated with a friend or musical acquaintance. That piece is a great work and worth a listen.
