I Suddenly Relented

Black and white photo of theater from stage located in Ouro Preto Brasil

I suddenly relented.

Just the other day.

It was a sudden awareness found in a plate of lasagna

Cooked to perfection.

In Ouro Preto Brasil.

Heavy.

Substantial.

Concise.

A dish with gravitas.

A dish earned through an active day of walking.

A dish full of mucus and flesh.

A dish suddenly unappetizing.

A dish with visions of Hannibal Lector eating brain.

I pushed it aside.

I drank the wine.

Who knows why?

And have not eaten beef since that time.

In Ouro Preto Brasil.

I still wear leather shoes.

My feet are picky and superficial.

They don't like plastic.

They create offensive odors.

Who knows why?

They hate socks.

Except in cold weather.

So I only gave up eating beef.

Just the other day.

And I still wear leather shoes.

Humans are endless contradictions.

Who knows why.

I didn’t really make a choice.

My path simply changed.

That day in Ouro Preto Brazil.
