Experiment April 21, 2025

An abstract video to support Experiment April 21, 2025 audio

This one has just a small smidge of Digitone II, but it is mostly Digitakt II and words through a Chase Bliss Habit. Through the usual FX: Onward—>LVX—>Mercury X.

It consists of four tracks. Two DGTII/DKII tracks. One mostly clean for beats, one more distorted and blown out for ambience. On top of those are layered two vocal tracks. One that is a subtle wordless droning phased distortion sound.

The other is the incomprehensible word salad. Don’t overthink the word salad as the amount of Delay makes it fairly random.

The word salad is largely the result of using a Chase Bliss Habit in collect mode. The Habit can be a bit of a challenge. It is primarily a delay, but it is also a quirky looper. It permits you to endlessly record 3 minute loops over 3 minute loops. Why do that? I dunno. It permits you to unearth the unexpected?

You can further mangle sound by “madjusting” many other parameters. This provisions endless variability even with relatively little variability in input.

The dangerous side: It is pretty much unpredictable in what result will come out unless you are a master of time, which I am not.

The exciting side: It is pretty challenging to predict the end result will come out yet if you are flexible and patient you can ride the waves to get those unexpected nuggets.

So, I uttered various words into a mic, ran them through the Habit hole while it is in collect mode and then repeated this process by replaying the DGTII/DTII multiple times. The Habit always picking up everything coming out of my mouth and even when I wasn’t recording it into the DAW.

Due to how I set the Habit’s parameters, the word ”dick” inadvertently appears more often than I would have preferred in this work. This is not to say that I didn’t utter the word multiple times that day. I’m sure I did. I tend to say “Don’t be a dick!” with surprising frequency these days; as though the phrase is a prescription that solves all the world’s ills. Were life so easy. In full transparency, I never used the word in a lewd or suggestive manner while making this piece.

Anyhow, the result is what you get when you utter random things 4-5 times with what ever parameters I started with when I started running the mic live. Again, don’t over think it. Except the “don’t be a dick” part. I actually think that’s sage advice.

Oh, and it is in video format this time.
